This multi-level medical facility with state-of-the-art technology also includes a comprehensive dental care center and medical office – doubling patient capacity.
New carpet throughout lobbies, luxury vinyl tile through corridors, and office spaces were part of the interior component. Sealed concrete on level 5 was delivered for event and future office space.

The project, which is also the base of operations for After School Matters, should serve as a model of collaboration between public and private entities, as well as non-profit organizations, as it provides space that is not only significant in its stated functionality, but also enhances the quality of life for the community, and provided opportunities for disadvantaged firms to participate in the design and construction of the project.

Additional exterior work included the installation of new canopies, entry doors and hardware, and new roofs. Interior work included coordination of asbestos removal with the University鈥檚 abatement contractor; selective demolition to provide access for the exterior wall replacement; and installation of new HVAC systems, drywall, carpet, paint, and window coverings.

A historic structure, a mere 6.6-acre site and 1,400 students on hand: these are a few hurdles McHugh faced for its $64 million renovation and expansion of Riverside Brookfield High School.

McHugh broke the work into phases and using every open space possible, including interior courtyards, to complete work while the school remains in session. An early presence on site, with the project team in place six months before construction began, allowed for aggressive scheduling. Work included construction of a music center in a 70-by-70-foot courtyard, renovation of classrooms, public areas and bathrooms with fixtures dating back to 1917; and construction of a new academic wing with main entrance, student commons and field house.

McHugh served as聽construction manager for the expansion and renovation of 11 elementary and middle schools.聽The most significant work occurred at Hawthorne Elementary School, built in 1888, damaged by fire in 1917, and refurbished in 1921. McHugh constructed a new wing then rebuilt Hawthorne in sections while school remained in session. The construction safety program McHugh developed for Elmhurst鈥檚 York High School was equally effective for these smaller schools.

While school remained in session, McHugh rebuilt the school in phases over 2-1/2 years, with only the renovated 1920s-era auditorium and tower building, along with a relatively new aquatic center, remaining. The new portions include a 300,000-square-foot, three-story academic building, commons wing with library and athletic wing with 59,000-square-foot field house, fitness center and two gymnasiums.
